Ancient peoples used to be so respectful of nature, and now we just mess it all up. I don't know if that's actually true. Hear me out on this one. When you look back at ancient cultures throughout all of human civilization on all the continents, you saw a lot of very extractive agriculture - just cut and burn the entire thing. There wasn't a huge respect for nature; of course, exceptions can be made. In modern society, we hold the same perspective, but the difference is we have technology and industrialization to simply wipe out entire forests, which you couldn't do as easily in the past when you had to cut down trees with an axe. Now, you just bulldoze the entire thing. The shift that's happened, I don't think, is so much in the mental perspective, appreciation, or respect; it's in industrialization. That's what's caused the big shifts to happen.
Written Description
There is a myth that ancient peoples were all eco-loving hippies, deeply in tune with planetary cycles, and would never destroy the planet like modern-day capitalism. I don't think that's actually true. Instead, I believe that human nature has remained relatively consistent throughout history, and what has changed is our technology and the ability to cause mass destruction by simply turning keys and operating bulldozers, rather than having to swing an axe.
